Page 5 of 5 Office Server tim is always looking for ways of working more efficiently, and as clients started to use and even expect online delivery it was obvious there was a big restricting factor to delivering a whole shoot through his ProMediaserve account. Uploading to a remote server depends on the dsl connection, which is often relatively slow. This meant if Tim was shooting several Gigabytes of images a day on a shoot it would take days or weeks even to upload to the server, so he was having to make a preselection of what to upload. Deciding that he would like on occasions to avoid this selection process, he decided to develop the ProMediaserve software to run on a network attached storage server from the office. By getting a fixed IP from his internet service provider and opening up the firewall on his network, Tim essentially became his own web host from his office. This meant, using the software to control outside access and permission, that huge shoots could be transferred onto the server in the office, and clients with permissions could log on from their web browser to the server in Tim's office to see all their images. As Tim got a 1MB/sec upload on his adsl account , browsing the the thumbnails is very fast for the client, and as he only downloads the images he selects very little dat is being transferred over the internet. So a 20GB shoot can be viewed remotely by a client and their colleagues as soon as the images are transferred from the memory cards, without Tim needing to make a selection. On top of that the server automatically does, rotations, makes thumbnail and previews for RAW images and ensures that all images are properly catalogued for archiving and retrieval. The server is also RAID 5 so it means that if a hard drive fails there is no data loss, the data shared across multiple disks so that when a faulty disk is replaced the data can then be written back. From the office server, the best images are then transferred up tot the hosted ProMedaiserve account for off site back up.
