2 TB Linux RAID server - fixed IP ADSL network - storage, backup, image manipulation and digital delivery
As we found online access by clients was becoming more and more in demand and the amounts of data seems to increase on every shoot, we developed an office server to do shoot storage, back up and delivery. The server is the DMZ address on our office network and we have a fixed IP address from our internet provider, so the server is directly accessible over the internet. The office version of the Promediaserve software again creates thumbnails and allows authorized access to the images from a web browser. This means we can put as many GB of data on the server as we want either directly copying from the Memory cards or laptops to the server and the images being available to the client in seconds. The connection to the server in the office from the outside is pretty fast, but still not as fast as a connection from a specialist hosting company although for a few clients viewing and downloading images it is perfectly adequate.
This server has RAID 5 hard drives, so shoots are backed up on the server as they are uploaded. In case of hard disk failure, the RAID system means the failed disk can be swapped and the data on it replaced from the other disks.
We still use the ProMediaserver hosted account for offsite back up of clients work and to ensure that they are available for access by the client 24/7. If there was ever a theft at the office and someone stole the server or a fire destroyed all the equipment and back ups, at least the best images are on a protected system the other side of the world. Also running your own web server means your network is more open to hacking and might not be available all the time after such incidents as power failures or your internet service provider having network problems.
