The image database behind this web site allowing keyword searching and high resolution download of images was designed and developed by us. Tim produced the first online image database system to upload, store and present his stock images providing a more efficient delivery alternative to FTP back in 2001. Initially he was looking for a solution to make the most of the potential of the internet to present his work while he was not in the office, so he could be lost in a desert and his clients still have access to his high resolution image files to print and therefore never miss a sale. However, back in 2001, it seemed the only solution he had was to create his own software to do this and so the idea of sharing the development and hosting costs evolved into Digitalphotosonline.com whereby other photographers could have the same software for the cost of hosting. in 2005 Tim relaunched the software under the name of ProMediaserve.com as the potential is for more than just photos.

ProMediaserve
ProMediaserve is software hosted on our servers that allows users of the service to upload, store, manage and control distribution of their images and digital assets using a simple web browser interface. Features include automated processes like creating thumbnails, watermarked previews and keyword reading on upload. Retrieval is by keyword searching and image zooming for detail checking. Management controls give multi-level access and download permissions with extensive rights controls and e-commerce if required. Functionality that designed so the photographer can be out doing what he does best, creating images not struggling with web sites or digital delivery. The service came about from Tim wanting to have his image database available to his clients and potential clients while he was away on a shoot or traveling and the internet with a simple web browser made that possible. Only back in 2001, Tim had to develop the software and hosting system from scratch himself. Thinking that other photographers may want a similar system themselves he decided to make it so it could be shared. By default, he became a small Application Service Provider, and now has been running a successful hosted online image management service for over 4 years with photographers and PR companies distributing 1000s of images worldwide.

Personal Case Study
There are many reasons why a system such as ProMediaserve is useful to a professional photographer today. Initially Tim developed the software for his own work-flows ensuring he made the most of digital advantages so images would never be lost and identical copies could be delivered to any number of clients within minutes anywhere in the world. ProMediaservehas is an integral part of Tim's work-flows for selling his stock images, delivering commssioned shoots to clients, showing event photography and having clients order prints.

Alternative Solutions
As much as Tim would like as many pro photgraphers to come on board with ProMediaserve so that a portal could evolve with some the worlds best images, running a software company is not his core business. Tim is still too attached to the creative processes of taking pictures. ProMediaserve was developed so that he had more creative freedom to go out and shoot more and not to tie him to an office. There are now a few other companies out there. Here are a few where Tim would have been looking to meet his own needs if he turned clocks back to 2001. We don't use any here as we have spent too much time and effort developing our own system to be able to recommend one, however they all probably have a lot more finance and personel behind them and are not funded by Tim's last photoshoot!
